Now what? below 6 6-11 12+
The information contained in the action points has been broken down into age groups from below 6, 6 to 11 and 12 and older. These delineations follow a typical pattern of the stages of human development introduced by pioneers in the field of psychology such as Erik Erikson (psychosocial stages of development), Jean Piaget (stages of cognitive development), and Lev Vygotsky (sociocultural theory). These trailblazers were chosen based upon the significance of their contributions to our understanding of human development.
The following action points are ideas I have devised borne from the research, intended to offer strategies appropriate to athletes in their middle-childhood and adolescent years.
Asking more of a child in these age ranges than they are developmentally (physically, emotionally, or psychologically) able to do will likely cause anxiety about future attempts and about their ability to learn the skill.
The following links are very brief summaries of those developmental theories. Only information within the theories pertinent to the ages highlighted by this website are shown.
Erik Erikson: Psychosocial Theory
Jean Piaget: Cognitive-Developmental Theory
Lev Vygotsky: Sociocultural Theory
