About
Scott Menin became a coach of track and field in 1996. His lack of coaching experience as a 24 year old proved daunting on many levels. A significant issue was in his own confidence to produce quality athletes. As his experience and ability in coaching progressed, he recognized that coaching was more than disseminating proper technique; it involves the mind of the athlete as well as the body. While earning his Master’s degree in sport and exercise psychology at Temple University, he founded Competitive Mental Strategies to help individuals, athletes, and coaches perform to their optimal levels utilizing mental skills. As a sport enthusiast himself, Scott has used mental skills in playing sports, coaching, and training athletes to do their best.
Over time, he felt through observation that while there are many facets to becoming a better athlete, some characteristics stand out more than others during different stages of development. In watching how athletes responded to their performances, in particular, he found that there seemed to be a significantly greater sense of enjoyment, satisfaction, and fulfillment when the athlete felt a greater sense of confidence (perceived competence) in their ability. As such, his philosophy pertaining to mental strategies now includes the development of perceived competence.
Not only does Scott have an understanding of the mental needs of athletes, but he also holds multiple certifications pertaining to physical needs including:
· International Fitness Professionals Association (IFPA)- certified fitness
trainer
· Functional Movement Screen Specialist (FMA)
· Titleist Performance Institute Golf Fitness Professional (TPI)- golf fitness
trainer
· Certified Massage Therapist (CMT)
· United States of America Track and Field (USATF) Level 2 certified in
both Throws and Combined Events.
Scott resides in the greater Philadelphia area where he coaches at local high schools as well as with an AAU/USATF affiliated club team. Not only is he the founder of Competitive Mental Strategies, but he is also his own client practicing mental skills and developing perceived competence in the sport of golf.
